Charles, H. Allison, Jr. is a graduate of Harvard Business School, in addition to working with the HBS Admission office for about 10 years. Outside of his admissions duties, he teaches finance, energy policy and sustainability management at The New School in New York City, where he is an Associate Professor of Professional Practice at The Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy. He teaches undergraduate, graduate, and executive education level courses. He is also chair of the Management, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship Program in the Schools of Public Engagement at The New School.

He has more than 20 years of work experience in investment banking and risk evaluation; in direct private market and foundation investing focused on impact investing; in state and local economic development finance, and in the renewable energy sector focused on biodiesel project development and solar power for use in housing and distributed electricity generation. Prior to this he worked at Vision Consulting Associates, a corporate finance and economic development advisory firm that assists small and medium-sized companies grow their businesses; consults on community and economic development; and develops alternative energy projects in the United States and internationally.

For five years he lived in South Africa working for a pan-African investment management company and a middle-market private equity fund. As part of his support of then-President Nelson Mandela’s post-apartheid government, Mr. Allison was an advisor to the provincial government of the Western Cape, travelling on several South-African Government trade and investment missions to Asia and Europe. Other professional experience includes positions at JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch & Co., James D. Wolfensohn, Inc. Barclays Bank, and at The F. B. Heron Foundation.

Professor Allison earned an AB from Dartmouth College with a major in Geography with a concentration in Environmental Studies, focusing on agricultural land use and agribusiness. In addition to his MBA from Harvard Business School, he is a graduate of the Executive Energy Leadership Program at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO, and he earned a certificate in National Security Leadership from the 2013 National Security Seminar at the U. S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA.  He serves on the board of directors of WE ACT for Environmental Justice, as Vice President of the Executive Committee of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York City, and on the Dartmouth Alumni Council.
